Zagreb looked a good solid team and showed it tonight, Ronny got his tactics and substitutes correct on the night. A brilliant win for Celtic giving us 4 points in what was a really hard start to group D in the Europa League
Celtic sat back early on allowing Zagreb, or forcing Zagreb to play the long ball, Van Dijk and Denayer did well with the long ball in the 1st half. A 4-2-3-1 formation to start the game and it worked well, we had to wait 6 minutes for the only goal of the game, Izzy picked the ball up on the left wing, stepped inside a brilliant ball into the feet of Stokes he took one touch and played in Commons who let the ball go past him to hammer an unstoppable shot back across goal and in at the far post, brilliant goal and a good start.
Zagreb had a lot of the ball tonight and we must thank the defence but more so Craig Gordon for several amazing saves one World Class when Zagreb were in and only Gordon to beat he didn’t blink and got a hand to get it out for a corner, a defining moment in the game, he really has filled the boots of Forster very well and fast becoming an important player on and off the park. Zagreb really kept the Celtic defence on their toes all night they hit the bar on 28 minutes and were dangerous on the break, as the game progressed Zagreb really turned up the heat but Celtic held firm for a superb win. Kayal came on for Commons with 20 minutes, hate to see Commons not on the park but with all these players missing just now, Ronny called this one right , I feel we need to give Ronny some credit now, we blasted him for losing, we need to get his confidence up also, like the players they are just human
We now play Astra Giurgiu home then away and that should see us on 10 points and with Zagreb and Salzburg playing each other twice when we play home and away, by the time the 2nd game against Astra is over we could be as well as through as these two will take points from each other. Tonight was a crucial 3 points and we now have getting out of this group firmly in our own hands
Great win, I don’t care about the performance, it was an ugly win and we should take these wins all day. Man of the match for me was Craig Gordon with Scott Brown not far behind. Look who we had missing tonight. Listig, Mattews, McGregor, Scepovic, Forrest and Mulgrew all injured we really are starting to see a good team coming through. 3 wins in a row and unbeaten in seven games
Brilliant 3 points
See you all Sunday for Hamilton at home.
