CELTIC have pledged to pay all staff a minimum hourly rate of £7.85 an hour, the equivalent to the new ‘Living Wage’.However, the club have stopped short of signing up to the Living Wage scheme itself, declaring that it would mean ‘handing over decision-making on salaries to another agency.’Celtic have been under mounting pressure for the past 12 months from its own fans as well as campaigners and politicians to introduce a minimum wage for all workers employed by the club – including those via external contractors. The club refused at last year’s AGM to bring about a ‘living wage’ for its employees, claiming that it would cost over £500,000 to set up.At this year’s AGM, however, Celtic chairman Ian Bankier said that the board understood ‘this is an important issue and have listened’, before pledging to introduce the £7.85 minimum wage.Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell added that the club board could not accept the Celtic Trust’s resolution to introduce the Living Wage, but would speak with staff over the new salary.
