Jimmy Page has testified in court following accusations that he stole the famous four-chord riff used in Led Zeppelin’s Stairway To Heaven.

Jimmy, along with former bandmate Robert Plant, have been accused of stealing the intro from the song Taurus by Spirit. The case has been brought by the estate of the late Spirit guitarist Randy California.

‘Something like that would stick in my mind. It was totally alien to me,’ Jimmy told the court on Wednesday as he denied all charges of plagiarism.

Jimmy, 72, and Robert, 67, formed the band in 1968, along with bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham.

They have become influential within the music industry, with Stairway To Heaven arguably their most famous and iconic track.

During his appearance in court Jimmy admitted to owning three Spirit albums and that Led Zep did take a riff from another Spirit track for a medley performed by the band during their debut tour in Scandinavia.

However Mark Andes, a former member of Spirit testified that he was adamant that the two arpeggio four-chord progressions are exactly the same.

In 1996 before his death, Randy told Listener magazine that he was sure Stairway To Heaven was a ‘rip-off’ of his own track, because Led Zeppelin regularly heard Taurus during as Spirit’s support act in 1968 and 1969.

‘The guys made millions of bucks on it and never said, “thank you”, never said, “can we pay you some money for it?” It’s a sore point with me.

Maybe someday their conscience will make them do something about it,’ he said.

Robert and John Paul are both due to appear in court to give evidence, although John Paul is not credited as a songwriter on the track.
