Trident: SNP will call for nuclear weapons system to be scapped.

Questions like “Would Labour scrap Trident in a UK Coalition Government with the SNP” and more are being asked just now. I am unsure if or when Trident will leave my shores. I do hope one day my kids can live in a Nuclear free Scotland. Not all Scottish People want these WMD’s, the people of the West of Edinburgh who live in the shadow of Faslane Nuclear base must wonder ‘Why did I buy a home here’ But many do work for the Royal Navy. I think one day these weapons will leave our shores, but all us Scot’s must pull together to make it happen. The SNP can say they will do this and that, we the people must back them in these matters or the SNP will fail. Time to stand up against Tory and Blue Tory alike Scotland and take our land back, be it in a Union or not, home rule, whatever.  I asked this question about an SNP/Labour coalition Government to get Scotland 100% and more of the ‘Edinburgh Agreement’ Link: http://shaunynews.com/2014/12/20/alex-salmond-hints-at-westminster-snpred-tory-vote-deal/

The SNP is to join with Plaid Cymru and the Greens to renew calls for the “morally repugnant” Trident nuclear weapons system to be scrapped.

The party will put the issue at the heart of their one annual opposition debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday. Angus Robertson MP, the party’s Westminster leader and defence spokesman, said the general election was a “massive opportunity” to stop the renewal of the Trident weapons programme.

He said: “A strong group of SNP MPs at Westminster will oppose a new generation of nuclear weapons being dumped on the Clyde, and will use any clout we have in a hung parliament to get Trident’s renewal scrapped. “This is in stark contrast to Scottish Labour, who have shown time and again that there is utter confusion between the Scottish branch office and their Westminster bosses.

“On this issue they are not prepared to take a stand against UK Labour’s pro-nuclear position. One thing we do know is that the Westminster parties just voted for #30 billion more austerity cuts – as 28 Scottish Labour MPs voted to support the Tories’ austerity programme. “Nuclear weapons are financially stupid and morally repugnant. “We have to stop wasting tens of billions of pounds on nuclear weapons – particularly at a time when Tory cuts mean that many families can’t afford to put food on the table – and this debate is a step in the process of getting rid of Trident for good.”

Nuclear convoy travelled through Glasgow despite weather warning

Weather warning: A nuclear weapon convoy.

Weather warning: A nuclear weapon convoy

By @ShaunyNews Via http://news.stv.tv/west-central/306306-nuclear-convoy-travelled-through-glasgow-despite-weather-warning/

I did this article earlier today: https://acenewsdesk.wordpress.com/2015/01/12/nuclear-convoy-on-erskine-bridge-in-gales-no-safety-in-awful-weather/ With a video added. I think in the weather this convoy went through to get all the way up to Scotland and through Glasgow was terrible.

Anti-nuclear campaigners and politicians have slammed the Ministry of Defence after it emerged that a convoy carrying nuclear weapons travelled through Glasgow on Sunday despite weather warnings.

The convoy, which Scottish CND argues is unsafe even in fine weather, drove through the centre of Glasgow on the M74 and M8 around 11.30pm before crossing the Erskine Bridge during strong winds.

The vehicles are said to have included four Truck Cargo Heavy Duty Mk3 vehicles, which are often used to transport nuclear bombs.

John Ainslie, the co-ordinator of Scottish CND, followed the convoy in person.

He said: “The Ministry of Defence has shown a callous disregard for public safety by driving nuclear weapons through the centre of Glasgow and over Erskine Bridge while Scotland was being battered by gale force winds. It is time we abandoned Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) and stopped the madness of taking nuclear bombs through Scotland’s largest city.”

The SNP expressed concern on Monday and highlighted additional safety concerns for the public due to the weather warning in place.

As reported by the Scottish CND, the nuclear convoy travelled through the centre of Glasgow on the M74 and M8 between 11.35 and 11.55 pm during strong winds – heightening the already high safety concerns.

SNP Westminster Leader and Defence spokesperson Angus Robertson said: “This is hard to believe. While Scotland was being battered with gale force winds and truly awful weather, a nuclear convoy went through the heart of Scotland’s biggest city and over the Erskine Bridge.

“The SNP has always condemned the practice of these convoys as they pose a major risk but in these conditions it is totally unacceptable and utterly chilling.        “The people of Glasgow and Scotland have made clear our opposition to nuclear weapons being based on the Clyde, but Westminster remains committed wasting up to £100bn on a new generation. Only by voting SNP can Scotland make sure that it is rid of these awful weapons and their dangerous convoys for good.”

Nuclear Convoy on Erskine Bridge in gales – No safety in awful weather

con110115asmBy @ShaunyNews Viahttp://www.banthebomb.org/index.php/102-uncategorised/1642-nuclear-convoy-ignores-weather-warnings

The Ministry of Defence have ignored warnings of wind, rain and snow and driven nuclear weapons across the country, through Glasgow and over the Erskine Bridge. The convoy of four nuclear bomb lorries plus a very large escort left the Atomic Wepons Establishment at Burghfield in Berkshire at 9 am on Sunday 11 January. It was probably transporting new nuclear weapons to Scotland. It was tracked across the country by Nukewatch. The convoy was filmed as it passed Birmingham on the M6 earlier in the day

On the M74 at Hamilton it drove under an overhead sign which said “winter weather take care”. It then went through the centre of Glasgow on the M74 and M8 between 11.35 and 11.55 pm.  There were illuminated “high wind” warning signs on the approaches to Erskine Bridge, but the convoy ignored the safety notices and continued over the bridge, 45 metres above the Clyde.

John Ainslie, Coordinator of Scottish CND, followed the convoy. He said:

“The Ministry of Defence has shown a callous disregard for public safety by driving nuclear weapons through the centre of Glasgow and over Erskine Bridge while Scotland was being battered by gale force winds. It is time we abandoned Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) and stopped the madness of taking nuclear bombs through Scotland’s largest city.

11,000 jobs at Faslane Naval Base at risk in Independent Scotland

Faslane1

With Independence looking more likely than unlikely the question must be asked, what will happen at Faslane Naval Base, is this more fear over hope, the issue on “Scottish people losing jobs” Propaganda so to speak? I don’t want Nuclear bombs 60 miles from my house, but them on the Themes in London, yeah, never happen!

An internal briefing by defence giant Babcock, distributed by the Better Together campaign, said “it is unlikely that Clyde as a conventional naval base would require the same numbers of support personnel particularly when the number of naval personnel will reduce significantly”. But the Scottish Government said it anticipates Faslane will require the same number of military personnel that it has at present, as well as a large number of civilian jobs, as it makes the transition to become Scotland’s main naval base and joint force headquarters. Speaking on behalf of Better Together, Labour MSP Jackie Baillie, whose Dumbarton constituency includes Faslane and Coulport, said: “It is clear that if Scotland leaves the UK then the jobs of 11,000 workers on the Clyde would be at risk. The nationalists’ plans don’t come anywhere close to providing that level of employment in the future. “This would not only devastate the families of the workers involved but also the local economy in my constituency too.”

A spokesman for Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “Transitional arrangements will support both the day to day operations and the workforce levels at the base. “We anticipate the same number of military personnel as now as well as a large number of civilian jobs – both during the transition phase and thereafter. “Of course defence contractors such as Babcock and other companies in the sector will be very well placed to secure defence contracts both during and after the transition. “Work to reconfigure Faslane is expected to involve major construction activity, and thus will also help create and protect jobs in the area.

“The Scottish Government expects that, at the end of the transition, the number of military personnel at Faslane will approximately match numbers there currently, and be supported by a significant number of civilian personnel. Given this continuing commitment to jobs on the Clyde it’s no wonder that veterans of the UCS (Upper Clyde Shipbuilders) work-in are backing a Yes vote in September” Derek Torrie, Unite convenor at Faslane and Coulport, said: “Those of us working at Faslane and Coulport are in no doubt that the security of our jobs is best served by remaining in the United Kingdom. Any other outcome is a threat to our future employment.”
