A story that should ‘Haunt Israel for all of time’ – Palestine’s Lost Children

This picture has emerged showing the four Palestinian boys running on the beach in Gaza moments before they were killed by an Israeli shell

I ask before reading you scroll down and look at the kids, look at their faces, look in their eyes, due to Israel a generation of kids will now grow to hate, no help can be given, none will be given to the extent they lose hatred. Can we blame these kids for having hate? Israel killed their families and took the kids lives and turned them into adults in the blink of an eye. Anyone who supports Israel on what they did are blind, religiously blind usually. I bore myself saying this but I am yet to be challenged! “There are more Pro-Israeli people per populous % in America than every county on Earth, Israel included” I have written how and why Jews and Arabs don’t want to hate, many are married and in love with kids, these are the ones who refused the hatred. Palestine is a place where they struggle to live each day, Palestine has NO WAR MACHINE! Israel is a WAR MACHINE, One of the biggest on Earth! So we have the ‘Children of Palestine” Same children Israeli’s sang songs about when they died, remember? My thoughts and links below

An image that angers and confused Israeli supporters Worldwide, not that there are many!

Sayed Bakr lived through a deadly missile bombardment in the darkest days of the war in Gaza. But posing underneath a portrait of his closest brother, Mohammed, who he lost in that attack, proved too much. After volunteering to stand with the picture, the 12-year-old broke down and called for his mother. Sayed and his friends were the target of one of the most harrowing episodes of last summer’s war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. While playing football on the beach, they came under fire from an Israeli pilot who apparently mistook them for militants.

Four boys from the Bakr family died in the missile strike and four were injured. In the immediate aftermath, Sayed was left paralysed with terror, unable to speak, writhing hysterically against a wall.
Today, more than six months later, he is one of hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza who need treatment for shell-shock.

After his crying fits, nightmares and frequent violent outbursts he was given a course of powerful anti-psychotic drugs for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He no longer goes to school, and is frequently visited by visions of the blast.

“I used to dream that I was dead,” said Sayed, speaking hesitantly in the living room of his family’s spartan home, a few hundred yards from where the strikes happened. “I always saw my brothers and cousins running after me in the dream. When the missiles struck and we were running away, I was certain we were all going to die. “Even today I am in continuous fear. Whenever I hear a loud noise or a bang, I feel terror.”

He is not alone. There is no shortage in Gaza of stories of severely traumatised children still gripped by the after-effects of the war. The 50-day conflict left 539 Palestinian children dead and close to 3,000 injured, but according to United Nations, the mental scars have been just as devastating, if harder to quantify. Children who saw their siblings or parents killed, often gruesomely, have been left stricken and around 35 per cent to 40 per cent of Gaza’s million children are suffering from shell-shock according to Hasan Zeyada, a psychologist with the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme. On Wednesday, an Israeli human rights group said Israeli politicians and military leaders broke international law by persisting in bombing civilian homes, even after it became obvious that it would kill thousands of innocent people.

Unicef admits it lacks the resources to cope. “We estimate that 373,000 children in Gaza needed psycho-social support after the war,” said Pernille Ironside, head of the agency’s Gaza field office. “We have been meeting on an on-going basis about one-third of those. The other two-thirds still require support – and they are not getting it.” The outlook is grim even for those receiving help. Muntaser Bakr, 11, Sayed’s cousin, who suffered head, arm and back wounds in the beach attack, which killed his 10-year-old brother, Zakaria, has likewise been diagnosed with PTSD yet is arguably in an even worse plight. Drugs costing £66 per prescription – a huge burden for his impoverished family are needed to control periodic fits and nervous convulsions. Weeks after the incident, Muntaser tried to jump from a balcony in the first-floor family home in an apparent suicide attempt following a row with his father, Ahad, who caught him in the nick of time.

He had to be withdrawn from school after he “almost killed a boy” in his class, according to Mr Bakr, 55, a fishermen, like most of the men in his family. The violent tendencies have continued at home, culminating in him trying to hang the four-year-old daughter of one of his older brothers. “I die 100 times a day just seeing him like this,” said Mr Bakr, as Muntaser fidgeted beside him with two teddy bears. “He is not the same child. He won’t obey anything we say. If he wants something, he demands it no matter how it affects others. For a while, he used to say he wanted to become a fighter so he could avenge the deaths of his brother and his cousins. He has stopped saying it now and I don’t want to remind him.” While many boys affected by last summer’s carnage resort to violence, among girls the traumas often manifest themselves in withdrawn and depressed behaviour.

Ten-year-old Sara Kudaih is still haunted by the death of her younger brother, Anas, who died from blood loss after being wounded during shelling in the town of Khurza’a, near Gaza’s border with Israel.

Sara Kudaih, posing beside a picture of her late brother, Anas, whose agonising death throes she witnessed.

The family were forced to flee under a hail of missiles, leaving seven-year-old Anas on the ground with a horrific stomach wound, a ghoulish scene witnessed by Sara and filmed by a Red Crescent paramedic who arrived hours later to find the dying boy. Today she is a frightened, introverted child who often refuses to eat or do homework, having previously been an excellent pupil, according to her parents. Asked how she is feeling, she replies: “Sad. I lost my brother. He was killed.”

Specialists have recommended 12 intensive therapy sessions to treat Sara’s PTSD. Even then, she is only likely to reach 70 per cent recovery, according to Mahmoud Abdul Aziz Abu-Toaima, a psychologist with the Palestinian Centre for Democracy and Conflict Resolution. She is one of the lucky ones. Diana and Mohammed Ayad, were orphaned after their widowed mother was killed during shelling of Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighbourhood as the family tried to evacuate their home.

Neither child has received psychological testing or support, despite experiencing enduring mental health problems, according to relatives, in addition to physical injuries that left Diana, 15, needing extensive skin graft surgery, and Mohammed, 10, having a toe amputated.

Scenes from Shejaiya, one of the neighbourhoods of Gaza City most heavily bombarded during the war

Diana, who once wanted to be a doctor, no longer attends school and is confined to the family’s shell-ravaged home by her injuries. “I feel very bad psychologically because of the incident and suffer badly from my leg injuries,” she said. “I’m not glad I survived. I wish I had died.” All this takes place against a backdrop of a dystopian landscape of ruined buildings and physical infrastructure – with the £3.3 billion reconstruction effort promised after the conflict having so far failed to get off the ground. Shejaiya, scene of some of the worst violence, looks little different from its shattered appearance last summer immediately after Israel’s ground offensive. It makes for a grim vista that has mental health professionals fearing a “lost generation” of Gazan children. “The recent war surpassed the combined number of deaths and injuries from all the previous conflicts and the impact that is having on the children of Gaza and their future looks absolutely bleak,” said Unicef’s Ms Ironside.”The adolescents here are at huge risk of losing hope and we face the danger of losing a whole generation of kids who decide they have nothing to lose and potentially get involved in militant activities.”

This will be a hard one for mostly American’s to process and understand, America has more support inside it’s borders per populous percentage than Israel does, you will all remember on Twitter or people writing about this here, #JewsAndArabsRefuseToBeEnemies Jews and Arabs don’t all hate, this is a fact and I speak to a few Americans who think what I am wring here is propaganda aimed against Israel. Well let me assure you, the World did not, as one, protest against Israel, we protested FOR Palestinians. The World went to the streets in solidarity with Gaza including a lot of protests for Palestine inside the USA.

THE WORLD PROTESTED FOR GAZA, 99% OF THIS PLANET WANT PALESTINE TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A STATE ON IT'S OWN!

THE WORLD PROTESTED FOR GAZA, 99% OF THIS PLANET WANT PALESTINE TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A STATE ON IT’S OWN!

I still don’t fully understand why Americans think this is fake, this news article is about Jews who survived WWII or Family for them saying “Israel should be taken to the Hague” But this real, a few months old this article, but I always believe ‘A picture can speak 1,000 words’, here are some here, links below. Again this is an older story, tail end of 2014, I missed it then so ran it today, slow news day I guess. WHY CAN’T WE LOVE? WHY ARE WE FOOLED TO HATE? AND MOSTLY IT’S RELIGIOUS PEOPLE WHO DON’T GET THESE IMAGES BELOW, THEY DON’T LIKE THIS, RELIGIOUS PEOPLE (SOME) WANT THE HATE TO CONTINUE. I don’t think I will ever get Religion for the poison it puts into some people’s minds, I don’t get it. Can YOU explain why?

The hashtag #JewsAndArabsRefuseToBeEnemies soon became popular. One of the most viral pictures turned to be the one that showed a kissing couple – Lebanese journalist Sulome Anderson and her Orthodox Jewish boyfriend. “He calls me neshama, I call him habibi. Love doesn’t speak the language of occupation,” wrote Sulome in her Twitter account. The journalist also told NYmag that the selfie became a “viral symbol of peace.” “This isn’t just about politics. This is about people. No one knows better than I the toll Middle East violence takes on ordinary people just trying to live.”

The ground operation in the Gaza Strip was launched by Tel Aviv on July 8, following more than a week of Hamas shelling Israel and the IDF responding with air strikes. Over 1,030 people, at least 40 Israeli troops among them, have died in the violence. On Saturday, Israel and Hamas agreed to a 12-hour humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza hostilities that started on Saturday morning.

However, soon after the truce was announced, at least 60 bodies were recovered by rescue forces from buildings destroyed in Israeli strikes in Gaza, reported the Palestinian Authority’s official radio station. Early on Saturday – shortly before the truce – rescue crews recovered a family of 18 Palestinians killed by Israeli tank shelling in the southern Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza health ministry. The victims were members of the Al-Najar family, who had been trapped inside their house in Khuzaa village east of Khan Younis since Thursday.

A group of Holocaust survivors and descendants of those targeted by Nazi Germany have harshly criticized Israeli actions in Gaza and called for boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel.

Following a letter from survivors of the Holocaust printed in the New York Times on Saturday, the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, which helped coordinate the letter, organized a press call Monday, where some of those who signed the letter spoke out against the assault on Gaza.

Participants in the press call included Edith Bell, whose parents died in concentration camps and who was taken to four camps herself; Suzanne Weiss, whose mother was murdered in Auschwitz and who was hidden by French peasants; and Liliane Kaczerginski, whose father Schmerke was a Jewish fighter against the Nazis in Lithuania. Also joining the call were Monadel Herzallah and Hani Jamah, two Palestinians with family in Gaza who expressed appreciation at the descendants’ and survivors’ efforts.

40 survivors of the Holocaust signed the letter and 287 descendants of victims also added their names.

“I resent anybody who will use those events as an excuse to exterminate Palestinians,” said Bell, who said she survived concentration camps by “pure luck.”

The letter printed in the New York Times has garnered international media attention from the likes of the BBC and Ha’aretz. “As Jewish survivors and descendants of survivors and victims of the Nazi genocide we unequivocally condemn the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza and the ongoing occupation and colonization of historic Palestine,” the letter says. “We call for an immediate end to the siege against and blockade of Gaza. We call for the full economic, cultural and academic boycott of Israel. ‘Never again’ must mean NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE!”

The advertisement cost $18,000. The funds were raised by some of the signatories.

“I applaud your courage for doing such a statement like that, that speaks from the heart,” said Herzallah, a member of the US Palestinian Community Network whose family was expelled from what is now Israel into Gaza. “I’m not surprised when I see these courageous statements by Holocaust survivors and their families…Our children and grandchildren will learn together in Gaza and all over Palestine that never again truly means never again for anyone.

The impetus for the letter came from Holocaust survivors and descendants of victims of the Nazis who were outraged that Israel used their histories to justify assaults on Palestinians. One of the signatories who helped organize the letter was Dr. Hajo Meyer, a German-Dutch physicist who survived Auschwitz and who died the day before the letter was printed in the Times. Meyer was an outspoken critic of Israel, telling the Electronic Intifada that he “had to quit grammar school in Bielefeld after the Kristallnacht…Therefore, I can fully identify with the Palestinian youth that are hampered in their education. And I can in no way identify with the criminals who make it impossible for Palestinian youth to be educated.”

The letter calls out Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, who was the author of another advertisement that ran in the New York Times calling on Hamas to reject “child sacrifice” and casting the Israel/Palestine conflict as a “battle of civilization against barbarism.”

“Reading the Elie Wiesel ad made me literally sick to my stomach,” said Maia Ettinger, whose mother and grandmother survived the Holocaust by escaping the Warsaw ghetto. “The ad is an act of towering and transparent projection because what is barbaric is collective punishment, and what is barbaric is indiscriminate bombing.”

The International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network says that much of the response they have received has been positive, though there have been violent messages sent to their e-mail address. +972 Magazine’s Ami Kaufman reported that some Israelis have expressed revulsion at the letter on Facebook.

“It’s a shame Hitler didn’t finish the job,” one Israeli named Asher Solomon said, while another, Katy Morali, added that “Holocaust survivors who think like this are invited to go die in the gas chambers.”

As the Israeli operation Protective Edge has so far claimed over 1,000 dead, users have been flooding the web with dozens of photos of Jews and Arabs together showcasing peace and love, under the hashtag #JewsAndArabsRefuseToBeEnemies Israel, Hamas agree to 12-hour pause in Gaza hostilities The campaign was launched by Abraham Gutman (Jewish) and Dania Darwish (Arab), both students at Hunter College in New York, immediately after the start of Operation Protective Edge in Gaza – and this week it gained momentum. “For me, it is hard to watch the current escalation between Israel and Gaza from afar. I wanted to find a way to be more than a passenger, to do something about it rather than just watch the news and hope for the best,” Gutman told Christian Science monitor. Abraham and Dania took a photo of themselves in Washington Square Park. They started a Facebook group and by now have been flooded with photos from around the world. The page has more than 5,000 fans.

Israeli army shooting blamed for Gaza death

A relative said Halawa was looking for songbirds near the Israel border at the time of Sunday’s shooting [AFP]

By @ShaunyGibson – Used to be @ ShaunyNews

Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian farmer near the border in northern Gaza in the first deadly shooting since an August truce ended a 50-day war, medics say. Ashraf al-Qudra, Gaza’s emergency services spokesman, identified the dead man on Sunday as Fadel Mohammed Halawa, 32, saying the bullet hit him in the back. He said the bullet appeared to have been fired from a nearby army watchtower at a man who was farming land near the border fence.

One of Halawa’s relatives said he had been searching for songbirds, which nest in trees near the Israeli border and command high prices in Gaza markets. The Israeli army said two Palestinians had approached the border fence and had ignored calls to halt, prompting troops to fire warning shots in the air. “Once they didn’t comply, they fired towards their lower extremities. There was one hit,” a spokeswoman said.

Via ExtraOrdinary You Tube

The army did not confirm the man’s death and had no comment on reports he was shot in back. If the troops’ responsibility is confirmed, this would be the first time a Palestinian from Gaza had been killed by Israeli fire since a seven-week war between Israel and Hamas fighters ended with an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire on August 26. Following the initial truce agreement, the sides were supposed to have resumed talks on some of the thornier outstanding issues within a month, but the deadline has been repeatedly delayed.

Israeli policeman charged

In another development on Sunday, Israeli prosecutors charged a policeman in the fatal shooting of a teenage Palestinian protester, accusing him of deliberately switching his non-lethal rubber bullets with the live round that killed the youth. The prosecutors’ decision to level a charge of manslaughter rather than murder drew criticism from the boy’s father, who said the evidence showed the killing was pre-meditated. Nadim Nuwara, 17, was shot during a demonstration in May at which Palestinians hurled stones at Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank.

A second teenage protester was killed there but Israel has made no arrest in that case, citing lack of evidence as an autopsy was not carried out.
Gaza residents testify about the effects Israel and Egypt’s blockade of their land has had on their lives. CCTV footage suggested neither youth posed any immediate threat to the troops stationed some 64 metres away. Their deaths stoked Palestinian fury at Israel that has simmered since US-sponsored peace negotiations collapsed in April. The accused, a member of the paramilitary border police whose name was not released, was arrested on November 12.

An indictment filed at Jerusalem District Court said the policeman had slipped a live bullet into his ammunition clip, which was meant to hold only non-lethal blank rounds with which to propel rubber bullets mounted separately on the rifle muzzle. Manslaughter, a charge associated with unintentional killings, carries a maximum 20-year prison term in Israel though judges can hand down lighter sentences. Murder usually carries a life term. “All indications show the killing was deliberate and pre-mediated. It was not random fire,” Nuwara’s father, Siam, told Reuters. “A manslaughter charge is unacceptable. What sentence might he get if the charge is manslaughter?” The policeman has previously denied firing live ammunition, saying he used rubber bullets only in the incident outside Israel’s Ofer Prison, near the Palestinian town of Beitunia. He has yet to plead to Sunday’s charge.

New Ice Bucket Challenge? Gazans Launch ‘Rubble Bucket Challenge’

ShowImage

An appeal to garner support for Gaza which imitates the wildly popular ALS Ice Bucket Challenge but uses rubble and dirt instead of cold water is picking up steam on social media. “I have to do something and to send a message all over the world about Gaza,” said Ayman al Aloul, a journalist who started the so-called Rubble Bucket Challenge on Saturday. When the 42-year-old discussed the idea with friends, some suggested that he use either a bucket of blood or shrapnel. “It came to my mind that it’s good idea to show the whole picture – how Gaza looks now, rubble, destruction, cement with sand, small rocks,” Aloul said. By Monday morning, nearly 2,000 had liked the Rubble Bucket Challenge page. Other hashtags doing the rounds on Facebook and Twitter included #dustbucketchallenge and #remainsbucketchallenge

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has seen figures ranging from former President George W. Bush to Lady Gaga to Oprah Winfrey being filmed getting doused after being nominated by friends. The viral sensation has earned $62.5 million for the ALS Association, which works to fight the neurological disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Aloul’s aims are more modest. “If five famous people in the world like actors or presidents will do the challenge, that means I succeeded in sending the message about Gaza,” he said. The conflict that has killed more than 2,100 Palestinians and 68 Israelis since July 8 has also leveled swaths of the Palestinian enclave.

Hamas executes 18 ‘spies’ – 7 of them in busy public square

Harrowing: Militants with Palestinian before execution

Harrowing: Militants with Palestinian before execution

This is barbaric and not something I think Hamas should be doing in-front of kids. We as a species are growing a generation of hate, when will it end? All this will do is make Israel kill more kids. This is ALL wrong. I won’t defend Pro-Israel people who defend pictures of dead babies. I can’t defend this. Kids seen this. So they will grow to hate and Palestine will get HAMMERED with more bombs again. Going around in circles. I understand why Hamas want revenge but perhaps in a different way, out the way, not in a town square. But when you are land locked you do awful things because you are a prisoner in your own land. This is horrid and I still won’t defend Israel for killing babies and celebrating and defending it, no chance

Hamas gunmen executed 18 people it claimed were collaborators with Israel in Gaza today. The Islamic militant group staged a public execution of seven of them in response to Israeli air strikes which killed three of its top commanders. The shooting of the seven in front of a mosque in a busy square were the first public executions in the Gaza Strip since the 1990s. A further 11 were killed today at an abandoned police station near Gaza City, Hamas security officials said. It came a day after Israel tracked down and killed three top Hamas commanders, the highest-ranking militants to be killed in the six-week war. In the public execution militants wearing masks and dressed in black gunned down the suspects whose faces were covered and hands bound.

It was carried out as worshippers emerged from the Omari mosque on Palestine Square, one of Gaza’s busiest districts. A so-called conviction letter signed by the “Palestinian Resistance” was posted on a wall near to where the bodies lay. A pro-Hamas website announced the killings, saying: “The resistance has begun an operation called ‘strangling the necks’, targeting collaborators who aid the (Israeli) occupation, kill our people and destroy houses.” Israel has reportedly used blackmail or the lure of exit permits to gain intelligence in the territory in the past.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights in Gaza denounced the killings. Chairman Raji al-Surani said: “We demand the Palestinian National Authority and the resistance (Palestinian armed factions) to intervene to stop these extra-judicial executions, no matter what reasons and the motives are.” Health officials in Gaza said the Palestinian death toll rose to 2,070 of mostly civilians on Friday after a father and his son were killed in an Israeli air strike near Khan Younis. Sixty-four Israeli soldiers and three civilians in Israel have also been killed in the conflict.

Mortar Bomb Kills Four Year Old Israeli Child *BREAKING NEWS* – One Sided Media

A young boy in a border community dies after a mortar is fired from Gaza, just hours after a rocket injures three in a synagogue.

A young boy in a border community dies after a mortar is fired from Gaza, just hours after a rocket injures three in a synagogue.

It is very sad when kids die in War and this kid is no different. What I am going to say is, why do the media report this but not when 10 kids die at once in Palestine? This is awful this young kids has died and this will no doubt enable Israel to kill more on the other side. I just wish people could talk as we are (WORLDWIDE) Teaching kids religious hate and just normal hate. This has to stop

A mortar bomb fired from the Gaza Strip has killed a four-year-old child in Israel, according to emergency officials. The attack occurred early Friday evening in a southern Israeli village along the frontier. Israel’s national rescue service boss Eli Bin confirmed the death in TV interviews. It was the first Israeli death since a new round of fighting erupted on Tuesday between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers following the collapse of cease-fire talks in Cairo earlier this week.

The boy would be the fourth civilian in Israel to be killed in an attack from the coastal territory since the outbreak of conflict on July 8. Earlier in the day three people were injured by shrapnel, after rocket fired from Gaza hit a synagogue in the city of Ashdod. The attack came just hours before the start of the Jewish Sabbath. Ashdod is around 20 miles from Gaza and the rocket was one of more than two dozen fired into Israel on Friday. Hamas has also killed 18 people suspected of being informers for Israel, on Friday.

The group said 11 were killed by firing squad at the Gaza City police headquarters following sentencing by courts. Hamas media then reported that seven more alleged informants had been targeted by masked gunmen near a mosque. Two of those killed were women, according to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, which called for an immediate halt to what it said were “extra-judicial executions”. Israel’s intelligence services rely, in part, on informers to pinpoint the whereabouts of Hamas leaders.

The deaths come a day after Israel killed three top Hamas commanders – Mohammed Abu Shammala, Raed al Attar and Mohammed Barhoum – in an airstrike on a house in the southern Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have reportedly killed four Palestinians – including two at the Nusseirat refugee camp. The Israeli Defence Force said it had launched about 20 airstrikes on targets inside Gaza on Friday in response to at least 26 rockets fired at Israel. So far more than 2,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, as Israel sought to destroy a network of tunnels used by Hamas and other militants.

A total of 64 Israeli soldiers have also been killed in the conflict.

I ask why the Media don’t report this below.

Joan Rivers –

“Good. Good. When you declare war, you declare war. They started it. We now don’t count who’s dead. You’re dead, you deserve to be dead. Don’t you dare make me feel bad about that.” “They were told to get out. They didn’t get out. You don’t get out, you are an idiot. At least the ones that were killed were the ones with low IQs.” She went onto describe Gaza’s Hamas government as “terrorist

I did this blog about what is said and shown in the video above https://acenewsdesk.wordpress.com/2014/08/09/joan-rivers-palestinians-deserve-to-be-dead/ and then prayed God would show her how wrong she was for saying “Palestinian people deserve to die” And, well, God, thank you for answering my cry for this awful woman to be shown telling a people they “Deserve to be getting killed” What she said was ridiculous, awful, disrespectful about dead children, babies, woman and men, people like you and I. Normal people, just average people, sadly many are dying and Joan thought she would tell the World with her plastic made up face “They deserve to die” Well, Joan, meet Karma and a prayer come true

Israelis, Gaza militants fight on, defying truce efforts

(Reuters) – Israel launched more than 30 air attacks in Gaza on Saturday, killing five Palestinians, and militants fired rockets at Israel as the conflict entered a second month, defying international efforts to revive a ceasefire. The 257984-gazaattackviolence seemed to delay any progress in talks brokered by Egypt aimed at securing a permanent truce. Israel had no plans to send negotiators back to Cairo “as long as the shooting goes on”, an Israeli official said on condition of anonymity. Medical officials in Gaza said two Palestinians were killed when their motorcycle was bombed and the bodies of three others were found beneath the rubble of one of three bombed mosques. Another attack reduced a security complex belonging to Gaza’s dominant Hamas faction to a huge cloud of smoke, but there were no casualties. Elsewhere, three houses were bombed, and fighter planes strafed open areas, officials said. The Israeli military said that since midnight it had struck more than 30 sites in the coastal enclave, without specifying the targets. Gaza militants fired 28 rockets into southern Israel on Saturday setting off sirens but causing no damage or injuries, the military said.

The fighting largely died down by nightfall.

Since the end of a 72-hour truce on Friday, Gaza militants have fired more than 65 rockets at Israel, military officials said. Two Israelis were hurt by a mortar attack on Friday. Israeli air strikes killed five Palestinians on Friday, among them a 10-year-old boy near a mosque in Gaza City. Egypt, backed by American and European mediators, has made no visible progress towards restoring the ceasefire that had halted fighting for three days. Egypt was expected to pursue its diplomacy on Saturday, meeting Palestinian officials in Cairo, but it wasn’t clear how much progress could be made if Israeli representatives didn’t show up. Both sides remain apart on terms for renewing the ceasefire, with each blaming the other for not extending it.

A diplomatic source familiar with the talks told Reuters it could take at least two days to see if it was possible to work out another truce. A sticking point was Israel’s demand for guarantees that any reconstruction supplies sent to Gaza would not be used by Hamas to construct more tunnels of the sort that Palestinian fighters have used to infiltrate Israel. “We are at a crossroads and within two or three days we will see whether we are heading left toward an agreement, or right, toward escalation,” Israeli Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz, told Channel Ten. Egypt is meeting separately with each party. Israel and Hamas deny each other’s legitimacy, with Hamas rejecting Israel’s right to exist and Israel rejecting Hamas as a terrorist organization.

VIOLENCE THWARTS ANTI-WAR PROTEST PLANS

Citing security concerns over continued rocket fire, Israeli police banned an anti-war protest planned for Tel Aviv on Saturday, saying regulations prohibited large gatherings in areas at risk of attack. By resuming attacks against Israel, Gaza militants appeared to be trying to ramp up pressure and making it clear they were ready to fight on to fulfill a goal of ending a blockade of the territory that both Israel and Egypt have imposed. Heavy civilian casualties and destruction during Israel’s campaign in packed residential areas of the Gaza Strip have raised international alarm over the past month. Gaza officials say the war has killed 1,886 Palestinians, most of them civilians. Israel says 64 of its soldiers and three civilians have died in the fighting that started on July 8 following a surge in Palestinian rocket salvoes into Israel. Israel expanded its air and naval bombardment into a ground offensive on July 17, and pulled its infantry and armor out of the enclave on Tuesday after saying it had destroyed more than 30 infiltration tunnels dug by militants.

The White House has urged Israel and the Palestinians to do what they could to preserve civilians after having failed to extend their ceasefire, while U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned that any further fighting would “exacerbate the already appalling humanitarian situation in Gaza”. At a rally in South Africa, Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu accused Israel of behaving like a “barbaric bully” in Gaza. Israel said ahead of the truce’s expiration on Friday it was ready to agree to an extension. Hamas did not agree. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said Israel had rejected most of the group’s demands. The Palestinians want Israel to agree in principle to lift a Gaza blockade, release prisoners and permit the opening of a sea port.

“There is no going back and the resistance will continue … there is no retreat from any of our demands,” Abu Zuhri said. Israel has resisted easing access to Gaza, suspecting Hamas could restock with weapons from abroad. Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet, said the issue of a sea port should be part of wider peace negotiations with the Palestinians and that Hamas should not at this time be rewarded for “using force against Israeli citizens”. In related violence, a Palestinian man died a day after being shot by Israeli troops confronting a protest in Hebron. Israeli gunfire had killed another Palestinian protester in the occupied West Bank on Friday, medical officials said.

Israel calls limited truce amid global fury

Israeli strikes on Gaza continued on Monday and killed 11 people

Israeli strikes on Gaza continued on Monday and killed 11 people

AP – Israel has announced it will be holding its fire in parts of Gaza for seven hours on Monday, amid world outrage over a deadly strike on a UN school in the Palestinian territory. The limited and unilateral truce came after world powers fiercely condemned the attack that left 10 Palestinians sheltering at a school dead, as Israel was pulling some of its troops from Gaza.

The truce will only apply to parts of the Gaza Strip where there is currently no military activity. The announcement was received with distrust by the Palestinian group Hamas, whose spokesman in Gaza, Sami Abu Zuhri, warned the local population to be wary. “Israel’s so called humanitarian ceasefire is unilateral and it comes in a time when the Zionist enemy wants to distract the world from the massacres they have committed against our people in Gaza,” Abu Zuhri told Hamas’s Al Aqsa television station. “We don’t trust their intentions and we ask our people to take extreme caution.”

The Israeli army said the seven-hour “humanitarian window” would take place between 0700-1400 GMT in all of the Gaza Strip except the area east of the southern city of Rafah, “where clashes were still ongoing and there was Israeli military presence”. The army warned in a statement that it would “respond to any attempt to exploit this window” and attack civilians and soldiers during the truce. It also said that residents of Abasan al Kabira and Abasan al Saghira, two villages east of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, could return home. The Israeli army said that it had on Sunday targeted three Islamic Jihad fighters on a motorbike “in vicinity of an UNRWA school in Rafah”. Ban Ki-moon, UN secretary-general, called the attack on the school sheltering some 3,000 Palestinians who had fled their homes due to the fighting “a moral outrage and a criminal act”. “This madness must stop,” he said .

Israel ‘sorry’

Jen Psaki, State Department spokesperson, said the US was “appalled” by the attack and called for a “full and prompt” investigation. “Israel must do more to meet its own standards and avoid civilian casualties,” she said. French President Francois Hollande said the bombing of the school was “unacceptable”, backing calls by Ban “to ask that those responsible for this violation of international law answer for their actions”, without saying who he considered responsible. In a statement early on Monday, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli prime minister, said: “Israel does not aim its fire at civilians and is sorry for any attack that unintentionally hits civilians,” without directly addressing the attack on the school. Israeli attacks on Gaza continued on Monday and killed 11 people, among them an Islamic Jihad commander, raising the death toll since the July 8 beginning of the confrontation to over 1,820 according to Palestinian medical sources
