This woman will be the first to know if Scotland has voted to become independent

Mary Pitcaithly

Mary Pitcaithly

Mary Pitcaithly will stand up on the stage at the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston in Edinburgh to make the announcement

THE EYES of the world will be focused on her at breakfast time on Friday morning. Cool, calm and collected, Mary Pitcaithly will stand up on the stage at the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston in Edinburgh to make the announcement. For those few moments she’ll be the only one who knows the answer to the question that a nation has talked about for two years: “Should Scotland be an independent country?” And then she’ll share it with the global audience in a historic speech which will be replayed time and time again no matter if that answer is yes or no. But the chief counting officer plays down what some would see as massive pressure. She said: “A lot of people have been asking what it will be like. I know there is a lot of interest from people around the world and I’m glad that so many people have become engaged with this referendum. “When I get onto the stage I hope I’ll be reflecting on a process that gave us a decision in an open and transparent way and one that can be relied upon. “I’m only the one confirming the result, after that it’s up to others to decide what it means.” She added: “We can expect an announcement around breakfast time – I’m keeping the time deliberately vague as you can never predict what might happen.”

It’s a slight change to the day job for Mary who was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to local government. She’s better known as the chief executive of Falkirk Council where she manages a £350 million budget and 7,500 staff. She might be a veteran of election counting nights but she says she still feels a buzz when the votes are coming in thick and fast. “Being the returning officer is one of the highlights of my job,” she said. “There is a buzz and as the votes are counted by hand there will be lots for people to see.”

Mary spoke to the Record yesterday as she was making final checks and preparations at Ingliston ahead of a 24 hour or more marathon event ahead of her. She’ll be the last person in the line of a massive Scotland-wide network of 18,808 people working in polling stations, counting votes, announcing results and ensuring the vote goes as smoothly as possible. Each of Scotland’s 32 council regions will run the polling process in their area before counting their votes and announcing a total for each side which is then transferred to the main centre in Edinburgh. Shetland Islands and Moray are expected to be the first areas to announce their vote with a predicted time of between 1am and 2am. The bulk of the announcements will come in between 2am and 4am with the bigger areas like Glasgow and Edinburgh expected in last at around 5am.

Councils have already received thousands of postal votes which will be counted first and verified by computer to match up the signature of the voter with the signature they gave on their postal vote application. But that will be the only computer involvement – every other vote will be counted by hand. And it’s simple – mark a clear X within the box next to either yes or no. The polling and counting operation will see councils pull out all the stops to make sure people get to vote and ensure their completed ballot papers get to the counting centres safely. A fleet of ferries, a helicopter, plane as well as lorries, cars and vans will all be employed. Most councils will use the usual polling places of schools and village halls but its the rural and islands areas of the country where the logistics of polling places and delivering votes prove more challenging.

Ballot boxes that will be used in the Scottish independence referendum

Ballot boxes that will be used in the Scottish independence referendum

And some of the most unusual polling stations include a caravan and a conservatory in someone’s house. In the Highland Council area postwoman Alison Bain won’t have far to go to cast her vote today because the local polling station is actually her conservatory. The room in Alison’s home in the tiny village of Opinan, near Gairloch in the Highlands, has been used as a voting post for over 20 years. The ballot address, known simply as No 11 Opinan, has served as the village’s only polling station since her father John McKenzie struck a deal with the electoral commission in the 1980s. And Alison is always first in the village to cast her vote “at seven o’clock on the dot”. She said: “Basically there was nowhere else for the polling station to go on this side of the loch so my father got in touch with the electoral commission and offered up the conservatory. “I’ve always really enjoyed it but it does leave a lot of cleaning up to be done on the Friday.” As for the day itself, Alison wouldn’t say how she was voting but all her hopes are for a clear outcome.

She said: “I’ll wake up, flip the ‘polling station’ signs over, vote and then leave the electoral lot to it. “The votes will be taken from here at about 10 then I can get on with just watching the results come in. “One thing is for sure – it’ll be a very long night.” And given the sparse nature of some of their communities, bosses at Highland Council are also using their trusty caravan. The unit, in the town of Coulag has been used for several elections and will be in place for voters again today. And they’ll also employ a cafeteria at Broadford Village Hall. Argyl and Bute Council is probably the council area with the toughest logistical issue. It’s the second largest local authority area in Scotland and has 23 inhabited islands.

They’ll also use a caravan on the Isle of Mull for 30 registered voters. But cars, lorries ferries and helicopters will be used to make sure the votes gets to the counting centre in Lochgilphead. A spokeswoman for the council said: “We do what we can to make the voting process as easy as possible for the people who live and work in our remote but stunning rural communities. “We also plan extremely carefully to make sure that a vote count on this scale runs smoothly.” In Shetland, boxes from the outer islands of Unst, Yell and Whalsay are transported using the council’s own Inter Island Ferries to the Shetland mainland and then taken to the counting centre by road And the region also has the most northerly ballot box in Scotland at North Unst Public Hall, Haroldswick, Unst which serves 342 voters. And in Orkney, around 1,600 voters will cast their historic votes in a place better known as being a parliament of its own.

Stromness Polling Station is at what’s locally called the Stromness Pierhead Parliament – a famous gathering place where retired men used to come and set the world to rights. Specially commissioned boats will be employed to bring votes into North Ayrshire from the Isle of Arran and Cumbrae. And in the Western Islands they’ll use a plane to make sure thousands of votes from islanders on Uist and Barra. A spokesman said: “We’re using a fixed wing plane to get votes to our counting centre on Stornoway.”

Meanwhile in Dumfries and Galloway some schoolkids while be given a daytrip away when rural areas have no other option but to use the local school. Police Scotland will also be alert for what will be a higher than normal turnout for a vote. Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins said: “The referendum is a significant event which is expected to attract a higher than normal turnout. “Policing arrangements for the referendum are well in hand and will be appropriate and proportionate. “Police Scotland’s priority is to ensure public safety and security. “We will respond appropriately to any issues which arise. “We will not offer comment on the numbers of officers or their specific operational deployment.”

Mary Pitcaithly

For all of time the image of the woman above’s face will be etched into all our brains here in Scotland. I will tell you why at the bottom.

So I voted yes, took seconds, used a pen, got shouted at for trying to take a picture in the Ballot room 😀

20140918_151613

Was a bit annoyed, as were others at 2 No signs and 1 Yes sign, but there was a big guy there with a Yes sticker on his blue jacket

20140918_151629

As I entered this room I could hear my history calling me, I actually stood for a few seconds remembering the blood that was spilled in the 1300’s, this is how big a deal this is for me, and of course Scotland

20140918_152110

Polling Station was right in-front of my Daughters School. As you can see it was a ‘Dreek’ day

Scotland – 3 days to go, how do you feel? Happy? Hopeful? Sure? Unsure?

IT REALLY IS THIS IMPORTANT!

IT REALLY IS THIS IMPORTANT! lol

Well Scotland we have 3 days to go and the image above captures perfectly the fear the BBC and a few other media outlets are doing, throwing stupid fear at people, SCOTLAND, RISE ABOVE IT. Many think, like me it’s a done deal, we won, yes won, we have gained independence from the Union, a Union of criminals and liars. ANYONE who thought Conspiracy Theorists were nutters need only look at the BBC and other Media to now know what a Conspiracy is. When 3 or more people get together to tell a lie or deceive and to be fair, they have tried EVERY TRICK IN THE BOOK! But failed!

We can say for certain now the No campaign has NOT played fair. I have done a few blogs on the in-coming lies, many of the Facebook referendum owners have warned people too. I knew it was coming. We have Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to get through, to not buy into the lies. I have kept an eye on all the lies and Myths here https://acenewsdesk.wordpress.com/?s=Myth and https://acenewsdesk.wordpress.com/?s=Lies Now not all are about Scotland so ignore the other ones

Other know it also...

Today’s Sun Newspaper, small article, but 100% spot on

So 3 days to go. Come Friday Scotland will be in one of two places. 1. Free from a Union of corruption, liars and cheats as we CLEARLY see now Scotland. 2. Part of the Union with HELL to come our way. Make no mistake Scotland, if it’s an unlikely no vote we are in BIG TROUBLE in many ways and Hollyrood can only do so much to protect us. I pray the vote is fair and has no issues at the end. Anyone remember George Bush Jr and his win against Al Gore? Well here is a reminder! When someone becomes POTUS, President of the United States Of America, they get out the car half way up Pennsylvania avenue to the White House

You hear the boos? His car was getting egged and he was the first President EVER to not walk Pennsylvania avenue, why? Well he cheated.

Now George Bush won Florida late on after Al Gore, we were told had won Florida. John Ellis was in charge of Fox News in Florida, his Brother was the Senator for Florida and  Bush’s election team counted the vote in Florida. It was the biggest scam ever. Gore won! Anyone who knows only a small part of this story know’s Bush cheated and 10 Months later on 9/11 the World Changed forever. We need to change our World forever Scotland

Now I know this is America, but Scotland we must we weary that the vote counters are fair. Many are saying “TAKE YOUR OWN PEN AND DON’T VOTE WITH A PENCIL” Now there is a reality to that, many will say “Nonsense Shaun” but think about it, if we all used a Pen and not a Pencil, it would be obvious there was something going on.

So, how do YOU feel about Thursday? You think Yes will win? You think No will win? You confident? You scared? There are so many emotions Scotland. I ask you all right now to not be scared, to 100% know and understand the No camp lied and cheated, but are still likely to lose, why? Because Scotland, we are WAY smarter than that, anyone watching the BBC or reading the Daily record and believing it, please, turn the channel, turn the page

Three days Scotland and we can be free to build a fairer, richer, happier Scotland

Listen and believe the lies and our Children and Grandchildren suffer, badly

Trainspotting Actor Peter Mullan Hits Out At ‘Bullying’ Scottish Referendum No Campaign

Many more are seeing the lies and fear being spread!! At the right time

Many more are seeing the lies and fear being spread!! At the right time

More people are having a REAL go at the No campaign, the BBC and other political liars, THANKFULLY we Scot’s are too smart to take in the lies. So we share the lies on Social media. Back in 1979 when we were lied to in the same circumstances of where we are now, we believed Westminster. Now with Social Media lies and anger and mistruth’s are shared almost right away. Yes Scotland see the lies, we have had enough, so has Peter!

#ChooseYes

Trainspotting actor actor Peter Mullan has hit out at “scaremongering” by anti-Scottish independence campaigners, branding it “deeply insulting and very patronising”. Mullan, who played Swanney in Danny Boyle’s 1996 film Trainspotting, made the comments as he campaigned for a Yes vote in Glasgow with Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. His comments came in the wake of reports that shoppers could have to pay higher prices if Scotland votes for independence next week, and that banks and financial institutions such as Royal Bank of Scotland could move to London.

Alex Salmond has accused the UK treasury of trying to smear the Yes campaign by confirming RBS’s plans to journalists. Actor Mullan, who also starred in Children of Men, is Scottish and described himself as a ‘lifelong supporter’ of independence. He said: “The scaremongering of the last few days was hardly surprising, it wasn’t unexpected. “We all knew that they were going to throw the kitchen sink at us and now they’re basically ripping apart the entire kitchen, it’s plates, cups, saucers, knives, forks, they’re throwing at us. “It makes me angry because it is bullying of the highest order and it is intolerable.

Mullan played Swanney in Trainspotting

Mullan played Swanney in Trainspotting

“In fact it is getting wearisome, every day you wake up and it’s like ‘what will they come up with today, what will they dream up about this catastrophe that will befall us all?’ “It’s deeply insulting and very patronising, this notion that all of us, for the last 2,000 years, hadn’t realised how useless a country we were, how we were incapable of doing anything and how, if as part of a democratic process we choose to determine our own fate, our own destiny, then we are looking towards complete economic meltdown. I find that really insulting. The actor and director said he had never understood why Scotland “didn’t run our own affairs”.  He added: “It was just like an instinct. It’s like breathing. This is something we should never be having to ask ourselves, whether we control our own country.” He also said a Yes vote would be “huge” for Scotland’s arts and cultural sector, claiming: “It will be massive, it will unleash a huge level of creativity we couldn’t even have dreamt of 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago. The confidence it will give to the creatives in our country is incalculable.” While polls increasingly suggest the contest between pro and anti independence campaigners is too close to call, Mullan insisted: “I think it’s going to be a Yes. “When people go into that little booth and they see that very simple question, I really believe a lot of folk who are undecided, when they really think about it, when they go with their heart and their head, I think they will vote Yes.”

Sun Newspaper to back Yes Scotland

images (7)

Rupert Murdoch’s Sun is teetering on the brink of advising its readers of its Scottish edition to vote yes in the independence referendum.

The tabloid has prepared the ground over the past week by damning the Better Together campaign, which is urging the Scots to vote no, and heaping scorn on the leaders of the three main English-based parties.

As the largest-selling paper north of the border, with 246,000 buyers and including many floating voters, the Sun’s editorial stance could be influential to the outcome of the vote.

None of its readers can be under any illusion that the Sun has no time for Westminster in general and David Cameron, Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg in particular.

Leading articles over the past three days have condemned the English parties’ concessions on greater autonomy for the Scots as “too late” while praising Scotland’s first minister, Alex Salmond, for “confidently leading Scotland towards his vision of a promised land”.

Twitter followers of Murdoch will also know the media magnate believes “Scottish independence means a huge black eye for the whole political establishment”. One of his later tweets was less strident: the people, he conceded, were facing a “hard choice with real pain”.

Murdoch’s Sun is far from being the only newspaper voice in Scotland, but only one title, the Glasgow-based Sunday Herald, owned by the US group Gannett, has been bold enough to back the yes campaign so far. It announced its decision in May and has had its sales take off ever since, rising by almost 25%, while all the others have lost circulation.

Its editor, Richard Walker, said: “I made the decision because I thought it was the right one, not to win sales. It could have gone either way.”

Magnus Llewellin, his opposite number on the group’s daily title, the Herald, preferred to play a straight bat, and said he drew heart from the fact that the paper had been attacked by supporters from each side.

The Scotsman in Edinburgh, owned by Johnstone Press, has been more obviously unionist in tone, while the other two big city titles, the Dundee Courier and Aberdeen Press & Journal, have pursued a largely neutral course.

Damian Bates, editor of the Press & Journal, said: “We are simply providing as much info as possible and encouraging readers to make sure they don’t miss the opportunity to make their voice heard.”

The Daily Record, which sells 204,000 copies a day across Scotland and is a sister title to the Daily Mirror in England, has remain loyal to the Labour party and therefore been generally supportive of the party’s anti-independence position. It greeted Gordon Brown’s intervention, in which he offered autonomy to Scotland should the no vote succeed, as a “fight to save the union”.

At the same time, the Record has been acutely aware of growing hostility towards rule from London. One of its editorials referred sympathetically to “Scotland’s genuine disillusionment with Westminster”.

More predictably, the Scottish editions of English-based nationals, such as the Daily Express, Daily Star and Daily Mail, have been staunchly unionist.

On Tuesday, the Mail lavished praise on Brown’s initiative, urging the people to celebrate “from the rooftops the glorious treasure we share in our British identity”. It savaged Salmond in headlines, news stories and an editorial. In a second message the Mail was scathing about the failures of the Better Together campaign in losing a once-commanding poll lead.

Privately, some Scottish editors admit that their influence over the outcome is muted because their readerships are largely drawn from older people who were, in the main, convinced no voters.

One editor said: “We aren’t reaching young people because they don’t read our papers, and it’s pretty obvious that the majority of them are going to vote for independence.”

One editor said: “We aren’t reaching young people because they don’t read our papers, and it’s pretty obvious that the majority of them are going to vote for independence.”
