Celtic not Hungry enough as draw vs Astra haults Europa last 32

Not Good Enough

We always make it hard for ourselves

By @TCNCelticNews

Angry, annoyed and other feelings come to mind as I sit and dissect what was a shocking performance by Celtic away to Europa Group D whipping boys Astra. A deflected shot by Johansen put Celtic ahead and we never looked like being troubled at the back. I am sorry but Scepovic is and will never be good enough for Celtic. At the start of the 2nd Half he was in, all he needed to do was pass the ball into the back post from 5 yards out but shot way over the bar, Mulgrew hit the post and again Craig Gordon got us a point. With minutes to go a Griffiths goal was chopped off for reasons only the ref will know. Had we hung on Ronny’s stock would have risen tonight and all would have been well. Now we have to wait, play league games and keep winning to keep the confidence high. Aberdeen away on Sunday is not ideal, we must win that one.

With the fog being as bad as it was it would be easy to blame the fog, the same fog both teams had to play in. Celtic controlled the game for large periods but one thing so far under Ronny that is a constant is we can never kill a team off. At 1-0 up surely Ronny got a message onto the players to say ‘Salzburg were 4-1 up’ All Celtic had to do tonight was hang onto a 1-0 against a really poor side. We had chance after chance to create in the final 3rd but we kept giving the ball away, the main culprit tonight was Charlie Mulgrew, I am saying for sure Kayal would do better in there. Like Lenny before and now Ronny both see something in Mulgrew to play him in-front of a superior midfielder in Kayal. With Commons and Stokes ill and injured and Guidetti unable to play in the group stages this was Scepovic’s chance to show what he can do, he blew it. Griffiths done more in the time he was on.

Johansen with a deflected goal that SHOULD have seen Celtic through to the last 32 and out the group

Johansen with a deflected goal that SHOULD have seen Celtic through to the last 32 and out the group

I am still very angry at Celtic right now. We could have been sitting with 2 games to go in the Europa League and out the group with room to spare. Now we must beat Salzburg at home on 27th November. If we fail and have to go to Dinamo Zagreb looking for even a point I think we will fail. In reality a point probably will be enough at home to Salzburg but as we have been seeing all season, Celtic can’t finish teams, we get 1-0 ahead and have chances and sometimes lose late goals. I sat watching knowing Salzburg were on10 points and safe and I just knew we would make it hard for ourselves. We are on 8 points from 4 games, not too bad but we must now go and beat Salzburg who will maybe be easier to play against as they are through. We had 1st place in the group in our own hands tonight. Look back at the goal we lost and it was Mulgrew giving the ball away near the half way line. This was a time in the game where I was screaming at the TV for Celtic to slow things down. We were rushing things 1-0 up away from home in Europe.

I think we will still get through this group

I think we will still get through this group

Sadly we blew it and will have to wait 3 weeks and hope we can beat a very in-form Salzburg side. As I say, if we get beat at home from Salzburg, we can bet Zagreb who are on 3 points will get to 6 points away to Astra. Meaning we could in the end have to travel to Zagreb looking for at least a draw. The most annoying this is we had it in our hands tonight. We lost the midfield AGAIN with about 20 minutes to go, what is wrong with Kayal? Why is Griffiths not starting some games?

Games played tonight and the final 2 fixtures. We probably need 1 point but 3 we must get to assure progression

For the first 20 minutes of this game Celtic were in a game with Partick, the away team were creating chances with Celtic hitting on the break. Say what you want about Ronny and his team, when they play, THEY PLAY! The game changed on 43 minutes when a terrible tackle on John Guidetti by Stuart Brannigan and off he went. Celtic were already 1-0 up at this point with a superb free kick from new Celtic star player Super John Guidetti, he won the free kick and hammered it high into the net, this was half an hour in and seemed to settle Celtic as we got more into the game
Half time, Celtic 1-0 Partick Thistle

Guidetti 1-0 Video. Thanks to @Celticgoals

Partick go down to 10 men

Partick go down to 10 men, video below

Wakaso replaced Callum McGregor at half time and Wakaso to be fair can cross a ball well. 2 minutes into the 2nd half it was 2-0, Stokes played the ball over the Partick defence with a chip, he was looking for Scott Brown but over hit it, there was Emilio Izaguirre to get to the ball and hammer home for 2-0
We waited under 5 minutes for 3-0, again Guidetti with a free kick and this lad just oozed class. If Celtic have not already offered this kid a deal I would be surprised. I am told he was on £15,000 a week at City with bonus’s that were huge should he play 1st team football, so we should be able to offer the kid a 15 year contract! Joking aside I would be throwing a luxurious 5 year deal at the kid, he is the best player since Larsson in that position. He has a mixture of Nakamura, Sutton and Larsson in there and that is a hard player to find. We have him, let’s keep him!

Guidetti makes it 3-0 with a SUPERB free kick, 3 in a row now, Video below

4-0 came on 55 minutes Guidetti had the ball in the box stand side and was fouled, penalty and he slotted home for a brilliant hat trick for a man we are all growing to love, I get the feeling John is loving us back. He is good friends with Jordon Larsson, yes, Henrick’s son. So I am guessing John has been told how special a club we are. John had tried the Premiership and got nowhere, he is the type of player who NEEDS wanted and adored by all around him, he gets that from the fans, his team mates and the club, as Ronny said “This looks like his home” Let’s hope a deal has been offered already as John can speak to anyone in about 8 weeks

Penalty scored and a Guidetti hat trick

Stokes came off for Griffiths on the hour mark and it was Leigh who made it 5-0, a superb run and cross by Izaguirre and Griffiths headed home, delighted he was and rightly so, he said he would fight to get into the team and he did himself no harm tonight.

Griffiths heads home his 1st

Griffiths heads home his 1st and Celtic’s 5th

Celtic at this stage were just powering through Partick, Van Dijk had a shot on the turn curled just past the far post as Celtic kept creating and on the night it could have been 10 easy. Scepovic came on with half an hour to go and he should have buried a couple of chances. 6-0 and the final goal was comedy gold but Leigh Griffiths won’t be complaining. Partick Thistle right back played the ball back to the Thistle keeper he went to kick long but Griffiths was having none of it, he got a foot to the goalies kick and it went in, 6-0 to Celtic and the Semi Final of the League cup awaits. The draw is on Saturday at 5pm. Do we dare dream of getting Sevco? or would we rather hammer them in the final? I don’t know, maybe not getting them at all would be better, it will only generate money for them

Man of the Match – John Guidetti – The best find in many a year, we MUST get this lad signed

Final Score. Celtic 6-0 Partick Thistle

Scott Brown – Captain for Club and Country

The Most Influential Player We Have

http://www.celticnewsnow.com/news/scott-brown-captain-for-club-and-country/102064?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=TwitterFeed

Being from Edinburgh I had the pleasure of watching Scott Brown play through kids football, to the Hibs first team to Celtic and Scotland Captain. What a journey it has been. I used to live a free kick away from the away end at Easter Road and would often, time allowing take in the odd Hibs game. Scott Brown was a player I noticed very early. Scott trained with Falkirk nearer home and Rangers as kid before joining Hibs as a raw 13 year old. Scott signed his first professional contract in 2002 with Hibs, making his first start as a substitute in a 3–1 win against Aberdeen on May 3rd 2003. Even then you could tell as a raw 17 year old he had the hunger and desire to be the best. His debut against Aberdeen was near the end of season 2002/2003, in Hibs’ remaining two matches of the season and scored in both, a double in a 2–1 win against Livingston and in a 3–2 defeat to Partick Thistle. Hibs then Chief Scout John Park was the one who spotted Scott playing and the rest is history. His mother would regularly take Brown to Hibs training sessions in Edinburgh and Motherwell where he was coached by Davie MacMillan, Gordon Rae, John Park and Keith Wright. Brown became a regular in the Hibernian team in the 2003–04 season, playing 41 times in all competitions and scoring four goals. He was fast catching the eyes of Scouts from all over England then closer to home. His wit in-front of the cameras was noted and we could all see a very young confident player emerging into Scottish football, Scott won Young Player of the Year award. In 2007, the year after winning his dream move

The Famous “Dunno” Video

Scott came through the ranks at Hibs with a few good players at this point. Kevin Thompson his close friend signed for former Scottish side Rangers FC in 2007. Reading FC were showing a real interest in Scott and had rumoured to have tabled a £2+ deal for the kid, Scott famously said afterwards

If I had chosen Reading I would probably be fighting a relegation battle next season and then maybe disappearing into the Championship. In two years’ time people would have been saying, ‘Remember that lad Scott Brown – whatever happened to him?’

Reading were indeed relegated at the end of the 2007–08 season. Despite intense speculation that he would move to Rangers, with Rangers fans taunting Hibs fans that Brown would sign for them, Brown agreed a move to Celtic with real interest from another team who used to play in Glasgow

Who Doesn’t Remember Ex Scottish Side Rangers FC Singing This

Agent Willie McKay commented that Brown was excited about playing for such a successful club and the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League. Brown was transferred for £4.4 million, the largest transfer fee exchanged between two Scottish clubs. His last game for Hibs at the end of season 2007/2008 was a home game against Celtic and he scored a superb goal. He scored many goals for Hibs but had a positional change to holding midfielder at Celtic. Gordon Strachan allows Scott to be a box to box player and I personally think this is his best position. You can’t hold a player like Scott Brown back, he needs the freedom of a football park to do what he does best. Strachan has been a HUGE factor in Scott’s development from a young kid to a grown up and a leader of men

Then came the ‘Broony’ and an awakening into a real Celtic captain

When he started his Celtic career many Celtic fans at the start didn’t see a £4.4 Million pound player but over time we seen a young kid grow into club and country captain. He is vital to Celtic now, when he isn’t there we don’t play as well. In the big games he lifts the players and will tackle with his face if needed. His most famous goal for Celtic to date was, well you seen it above, that goal will go down in Celtic history for all of time

With it being a record fee many Celtic fans wanted immediate return, but we waited and it was worth the wait

With it being a record fee many Celtic fans wanted immediate return, but we waited and it was worth the wait

Brown was a regular in the Scotland national under-21 football team managed by Rainer Bonhof, who recommended Brown to contacts in his native Germany. Brown made his debut for Scotland as a substitute in a friendly against the USA in November 2005, then making his competitive debut for Scotland in March 2007, coming on as a substitute for Gary Teale during a Euro 2008 qualifying match against Georgia. Having performed well in that appearance, his first start for Scotland in the following match, a 2–0 defeat against 2006 World Cup winners Italy. Scott never looked back and was appointed captain by then new Scotland manager Gordon Strachan in February 2013 the same Manager who gave Scott his chance at the big time. The last two games for Scotland, Georgia at home (1-0) and Poland away (2-2) Scott was man of the match in both games. A few Scottish International players who ply their trade in the English game stated this week they think Scott can play top 6 in the English Premiership no problem, let’s hope he remains with Celtic for life, he is peaking at the age of 29 and we will see him get even better. I think he is happy at Celtic. His comment regarding Reading FC when he was younger I think tells us all he won’t leave Celtic to become a player who is unknown and disappears into the English game, Scott wants to be a Celtic legend, no inside knowledge here, you can just tell. The impact he is having for Celtic and Scotland just now is superb, Scott has a good 5 years left in him, let’s hope they are in the green and white hoops

His goal against Poland away (0-1)

Money doesn’t buy you this attitude

Celtic in the money at European financial table

With the team struggling to find form on the park some good news that the finances won’t push us to the same place as other  teams who struggle to make end’s meet. Lustig, Matthews, Forrest, Mulgrew all injured, the first 3 for a while now and losing Scott Brown for the first part of the season has hampered Ronny’s best 11. With a fit Lusting and Matthews I think we are better on the right hand side as for the last while Ambrose has been the overlapping full back and a huge fail. I know many don’t rate Forrest but a fit Forrest is a good player. Mulgrew love him or hate him can deliver a ball for fun, so Ronny needs time to get HIS 11 on the park. Look at it with optimism and we are 6 points from the top of the league with a game in hand, we sit top of Group D in the Europa League and are still in the League Cup. I know it it is very hard to look forward but at the end of the season we could be sitting with a treble and a superb run in the Europa League, ever the optimist I am, but you have to try and understand why we are where we are on the park just now. I watched the Hamilton game over again and we had 10 chances we should have stuck home with ease and several other half chances, on another day we win 5-0. Hamilton done to us what we did to FC Barcelona. Ronny needs time and we now have the strikers we need, the defence will improve, we have a good keeper and our midfield is decent. We have a lot more width than we did before so we look to the future and hope we can turn the corner. As said, we are far from out of anything, it’s just not clicking on the park, but in some games we are beating teams well, Dundee United 6-1 comes to mind. So on the park we have to do better, off the park many, me included think the club have a wealth of Millions hiding away, all we must do is look at the crowds and understand that is lost revenue for the club in an already unfair financial league compared to others, so we turn the coin around and try and see better. Mark Wotte the SFA Performance Director has came out and defended Ronny stating this is standard practice in Europe changing players diet and fitness regime, I believe Ronny still has the dressing room, if he can implement what he wants, I believe it will come good, but he is running out of time for sure, the defeat to Hamilton came at an awful time with the International break, the manager would have wanted to go our and win days later so he could get some sleep.

AN independent study on European football clubs’ financial health and stability ranks Celtic among the top three in the continent and Rangers in the lower reaches. The “virtual Credit Football League” table, compiled by city analysts for investors, charts the fortunes of publicly-listed and privately-run European clubs, with the Scottish champions third behind Dutch giants Ajax and Londoners Arsenal. Rangers, presently in the grip of an ongoing boardroom power struggle and trailing Hearts in the second tier title race, are ranked 31st from 44 with French side Lens at the bottom and Italians Inter Milan second from the foot of the table.

When privately-owned clubs are removed from the table, Celtic are in first place. The report has been compiled by US-based markets and risk specialists McGraw Hill Financial and examined how equity markets react to on-field performance through stock prices and gauged how the market viewed a club’s credit. “Deteriorating match performance, combined with economic struggles and financial concerns could sink a corporation. An example of such a case is in Rangers International Football.”

In contrast, Celtic’s “status as perennial title contenders and their recent success in winning the Scottish Premier league for the last three seasons has apparently led to a positive market setiment. The report also lists Celtic as the club least likely to default. The clubs were assessed using 24 different criteria, including performance and transfers and match attendance and fan spend. “Our credit indicators provide investors with a set of essential signals to monitor improving or declining credit strength in football clubs,” said Pavle Sabic, director of Credit Market Development at S&P Capital IQ, which is part of McGraw Hill Financial.

Leigh I am just Celtic fan mate, I just tweeted this to you

“@Leighgriff09 Leigh I am Celtic fan, The boy from Hibs you had a go at scored @ Ibrox twice. Forget before, focus now. Riorden never listened”

And I really wish you would listen to people like me who are not giving you a hard time but advice. I remember Derek Riordan joined Celtic, I coached him when he was 12 years old, I told him he could be a Celtic Legend as he was MORE than good enough to improve further. Most of my mates drink in the Four In Hand and The Office, and most rate you, sadly some mock you. I am a Celtic fan Leigh, not an enemy pal. You are living the dream of a million + Celtic Fans, do you realise this mate?

What I see with you Leigh is a really decent guy who lives on what goal he scored yesterday. Leigh that is gone, your goals when at Hibs are in the past, you are on the bench because your manager can see the same thing as many Celtic fans, Hibs fans and I can all see. If I could give you any advice buddy it would be to forget what went before and focus on what you are going to do next, otherwise you will go from club to club, earn less money and nobody will really remember you, kind of like Riordan and look at him when he was 21 years old and had the football world at his feet, and for the record, Derek is a great lad, may I add. Look at all the young Scottish players going to England and the young lad from Dundee United Ryan Gauld going to Sporting Lisbon.

Leigh we almost share friends, we have been in the same pub, you really come across as a really decent guy, but this is the same advice I would have gave to any player at any level in my 15 years at what  you would class a “Crap Level” I am guessing? Leigh, screw the nut and in 15 years from now Celtic fans will remember you. I guess if Hibs are the side for you then you go and become a legend there buddy.

Forget yesterday and plant seeds for tomorrow, or Celtic fans will turn on you quicker and this will speed up your departure and chance at  a club that puts you and shows you at a level you truly will be noticed at. Guidetti came right in and started, to be honest, you at your best, that would be you and we probably would not need Guidetti Leigh. Sadly we did

I am not expecting a reply Leigh, but I do ask you look inside yourself one last time and do what is right for  YOU. If you listen to friends, you will lose pal. I know most of them, really decent guys, but mate, want a career you can look back on and be proud? Get you Mrs and move near Celtic’s training ground then one day when you leave football you can stay and be a coach or look back and say “I was someone” At this rate all you will have is regret buddy, I am sure Ronny told you this, Lenny and Fenlon and other managers also, I know football, managers would take a keen interest in you and want the best from you, why? Your football ability not many have, but Leigh you ain’t showing it mate and I think I speak for most Celtic fans when I say “Would love to see you in the side and playing well and scoring goals”

My opinion may be wanted or not wanted, either way I am in a position to give one, and I have been fair and decent Leigh

You have two choices mate. We all want to see you as this Leigh

Man of the Match Craig Gordon kept Salzburg at bay with a few World class saves. In a game where both sides had a lot of the ball in stages we have to be happy with a 2-2 in our opening game. On 13 minutes Brown won the ball 25 yards our gave it to Commons on the edge of the box, Commons let the ball roll past him and there was Wakaso to power a low bending shot for a good start and an amazing goal, 1-0 up and we hoped for no repeat of previous games in Europe. We should and could have added to that goal.

Wakaso celebrates his wonder goal

Wakaso celebrates his wonder goal

Celtic couldn’t hold on and on 35 minutes Ambrose played a Salzburg player on then his outstretched leg pushed the ball over Gordon, Ambrose was our weak link all night and I hope either Lustig or Matthews are back soon, Ambrose looks too relaxed and this was shown with him playing on the player to make it 1-1. We were lucky to go in at 1-1 but we take it as Salzburg were all over us the last 15 minutes of the 1st half.

The 2nd half seen Salzburg have most of the ball. 15 minutes into the 2nd half and 2-1 Celtic a McGregor cross was headed out and from 25 yards there was Scott Brown to hammer home with the aid of a deflection. Celtic had a few chances on the break but just couldn’t release the ball quick enough. I said in live commentary I seen a Salzburg goal coming but when it did you had to say well done. Izzy gave away a stupid free kick, like he did 5 minutes before this time on 34 minutes and the free kick I don’t think anyone would have saved, it was a cracking goal if we are to be fair, 2-2 and it could have went either way but we settle with 2-2

Brown made it 2-1 to Celtic

Brown made it 2-1 to Celtic

Again Scepovic got no service, when he did he had to come deep for it, we never got the ball wide enough, but we take the 2-2 and look forward to the next game against Dinamo Zagreb on the 2nd October, Zagreb beat FC Astra 4-1 tonight

We take the point and look to get better as we go

Man of the match Craig Gordon, outstanding tonight

With Europa League on Thursday Celtic needed all 3 points and some confidence. Ronny started 2 new players in Tonev and Scepovic, they both had decent games, Tonev I think is a decent player but he needs game time. Scepovic made several superb runs for through balls, once we learn his movement he will score goals you can tell the lad knows where to be. Celtic took the lead on 9 minutes a Commons corner, great ball in a volley from Ambrose came of the chest of Denayer almost on the line and 1-0 to Celtic. 7 minutes later a great run and ball in from Commons seen Scepovic score but the linesman said he was offside, I wasn’t sure on that one. Aberdeen had few chances before Scott Brown made Langfield save.

Denayer gets a chest on an Ambrose volley to make it 1-0

Denayer gets a chest on an Ambrose volley to make it 1-0

It was all Celtic at this stage, Tonev hit the outside of the post with a shot come cross, McGregor then came in from the right and curled a shot just wide. All Celtic at the 25 minute mark. Commons had two half chances soon after a shot and then a cross from Tenov he couldn’t reach. All Celtic and it was ‘When will the 2nd goal come” Aberdeen had a few chances but the half ended in a deserved 1-0 lead for Celtic

The 2nd half was a totally different game, with Brown, Tonev and Scepovic all lacking match fitness, Aberdeen came into the game. Celtic made it 2-0 50 seconds into the second half, a ball squared to Commons 10 yards out, he moved it to his left foot, shot at the left post, was going in but the ball rebounded of an Aberdeen defenders leg for 2-0 and well deserved at this point. Then step up Craig Gordon, he pulled off a few saves and something he does that Forster never did, come for crosses, at one point he came about 15 yards out to gather the ball, he is always shouting at his defence and he did well today and is turning into a brilliant free after selling Forster for £10 Million.

Commons scores Celtic's 2nd and what proved to be the winner

Commons scores Celtic’s 2nd and what proved to be the winner

Aberdeen started to get a hold of the ball and had a few chances, Celtic at this stage stopped pressing as well as we were, but to be expected with players lacking fitness. Commons shot and hit the bar on 55 minutes. Almost right away Aberdeen got a goal, 2-1 came when David Goodwillie headed in for his first Aberdeen goal after an Andrew Considine cross. To be fair Van Dijk should have won the header. Celtic made a few changes John Guidetti for his debut as well as Beram Kayal with Stefan Scepovic and Scott Brown going off at this stage Aberdeen looked more likely to score again, but a lot of praise to the manager today for a tactical change that worked, off  came Tonev for Biton to match up with Aberdeen’s midfield centre 3. Aberdeen had a lot of crosses in the box but Gordon was there for all of them. Aberdeen had a lot of possession in the middle of the 2nd half without actually causing any real damage

John Guidetti did well and you can tell the kid will close down and make things happen. This was a game where we gave 3 new players a game and got Scott Brown back just in time for Europe. Ronny will know his best side by now, no sign of Berget, Griffiths and Stokes proves Ronny will play his team and I was delighted to see that, I may not agree but we need our manager to be strong, Ronny is learning fast at one of the biggest clubs on earth where expectations are brutal for the manager. Celtic had 2 chances before the final whistle, McGregor slotted home but was offside, Johansen won the ball at the edge of the Celtic box and started a run, before we knew it he was in the Aberdeen box about to fire home but the Aberdeen goalie got down well.

Final Score: Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen, 3 points are way more important as we look to find a settled 11

TCN Man of the match – Denayer. He blocked a few shots and made it look so easy. Commons had a good game and got his goal, Johansen was better today, but for me Denayer shaded it

Celtic have won 1 point from 6 from an away game to ICT and today against Dundee, Celtic should and deserved to lose today, make no mistake Celtic were amateurish today, we had no leaders, we didn’t press the ball, we didn’t get the ball wide and when we did it was Ambrose, we don’t have a true striker, the best striker we have scored our goal and it was a heavy deflection at that, this is the worst Celtic team in many years. Ronny I am sorry, I hate to criticise ANY Celtic manager or player but we are just awful

The defence, midfield and attack are just way out of sync, there is none of the easy on the eye football we seen in the last several years, it is flat and we have no ideas when we have the ball. Credit to Dundee for today’s game as they deserved to win this game 4-1 at least in the last 20 minutes Dundee had 5 chances 2 saved and 3 just wide, Celtic I can’t remember any shots apart from Griffiths goal.

We need this lad on the park, end off!

We need this lad on the park, end off!

Peter Lawwell can dress this situation up all day but we the fans can see through his bluff, he has a manager who has got no idea how to set a team up. When a manager comes to a team that was working well he lets it stay that way and introduce change slowly over a season, but no Ronny is forcing a tactical shape to the team we don’t have the players for, it may have worked for Ronny at his last team, but getting beat by ICT and 1-1 away to Dundee is a disgrace. Add to that getting put out of the Champions league, reinstated and put out again, we have NOTHING. The goals Commons got last season were from wide areas. We miss Samaras badly and I don’t care what anyone says, we are missing Scott Brown also. We are downgrading badly. We can only hope Wakaso, Tonev and the incoming Stefan Scepovic can help. For Scepovic to work we MUST get the ball wide more, we are 30 yards out and clueless. The ONLY positive today is, I hope, we see more Griffiths and less Berget. Griffiths will get 20 goals a season and create, people wonder why we get loan players in, thank GOD we never paid for Berget

I have nothing else to write, we are rubbish just now, Dundee and ICT seem better than us. I fear this could be a long  hard season, I hope the 3 players I mention and Brown and Forrest coming back help but with a manager like Ronny who played Berget and dropped Commons in Europe we can’t be sure

Dreadful, no excuses, just very very poor from a very average Celtic side, we can’t get worse so we hope we can pick it up, sadly I think Ronny talks a good game
